Our troop will head to Camp Cedars in Fremont, Neb., for summer camp from June 27 through July 3, 2010. We will be at the Mandan camp site. More details will be announced as they become available.
Camp Cedars
Camp Cedars is part of the Covered Wagon Scout Reservation composed of Camp Eagle and Camp Cedars. Located approximately 4 miles east of Fremont, Nebraska, Camp Cedars is one of the Midwest's premier Scout Summer Camps. Located on the bank of the Platte River, the camp provides long-term camping experience for over 2,400 campers each summer. Activities at camp include archery, rifle and shotgun shooting, nature, scoutcraft, COPE, swimming, boating, biking, horseback riding and canoeing. Camp Cedars also features a rappelling tower, 60 feet high, with climbing walls. The highest tower in the BSA!
Check-in is begins at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 27.
Check-out ends at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3.
We'd probably be leaving/arriving at the Basilica about 4 hours before and after these times. With this schedule everyone will need to attend Mass on Saturday evening prior to leaving Des Moines for camp.
Cost is $184 per scout if paid in full by April 15 (increases to $199 after April 15) and $90 per adult leader.
The sooner we have paid our fees, the better the chances are of receiving our desired merit badge and activity requests.
The camp offers 41 merit badges, including several eagle-required ones. The guide lists which requirements (based on 2010 requirements) that will not be completed at camp. Thus with a little preparation you can have these reuqirements completed prior to camp and thus finalize the merit badge before you leave camp. They even offer the aviation merit badge including a 45 minute orientation flight. I have been told by another scoutmaster that the camp has an outstanding shooting range but that the boating facilities are marginal owing to the small size of the lake. They recommended the merit badge classes rather than the 'kit' programs for younger scouts. The camp also has equestrian activities as well.
